Woody Harrelson wants 2013 to be fur-free

Will you join Woody Harrelson in going fur-free for 2013 and will you make others aware on why they should do the same?

To help spread the word on the horrific cruelty that animals experience when used for their fur, Harrelson, the two-time Academy Award-nominated actor, took on the role as narrator for a new video that exposes the cruelties of the fur trade. The video, produced by the Humane Society of the United States, aims to educate the public on why a person shouldn’t wear animal fur for fashion.

While the video does not expose the gory realities of the fur trade, it does fully educate viewers without throwing horrific images in their face.

"It's always difficult for people to deal with images of animal cruelty head-on; no one wants to look at what really goes into the making of fur. This video is so impactful because it lets you know without having to see," says Harrelson. "I really hope it makes fashion designers and consumers think twice about using and wearing animal fur, when so many great alternatives are available and just as stylish."

While many celebrities wear fur and don’t think twice about it, Harrelson hopes to raise awareness on the issue and draw people away from the trade. As long as the public is asking for furs (including faux furs) in their wardrobes, millions of lives will continue to come to a traumatic end.

It is important that there are positive role models like Harrelson who are helping to spread the word, without having to show horrifying images.

“We are so grateful to Woody for literally voicing his support of The Humane Society of the United States’ fur-free campaign. He brings the right tone to an innovative video that is easy to watch but which leaves a lasting impression,” says Beverly Kaskey, senior director of HSUS’ Hollywood Outreach program.

Many believe that ignorance is bliss, and often times, it’s the graphic images that push people away from learning the truth. The HSUS’ creative video educates the viewer without having to show them what’s really going on. Watch the video for yourself and urge others to do the same. Imagine how many lives you could spare just by sharing the video with others who may be unaware on how horrible the fur trade actually is. Help urge others to steer away from animal fur and even “faux” fur and share the HSUS’s new video with them.

Since 1954, the HSUS has been working hard to protect animals of all kinds. In 2010, the HSUS worked in Congress to pass the Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2010, which requires all animal fur to be labeled, no matter what its value is. Recently, the HSUS discovered that domestic dog fur is being sold in New York City.
