Vegan Jorge Garcia does stand up for cancer benefit

By far my favorite character on my favorite TV show LOST is Hurley. Because of that I became an avid reader of actor/comedian/awesome mofo Jorge Garcia's blog. He has taught us how to make our own almond milk and I was very pleased to read when he made the decision to go vegan.

Last weekend Jorge Garcia decided to dust off his stand up shoes when he decided to take part in a fundraising event for his good friend Suzanne Whang who is battling stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Much of his time on stage was dedicated to his choice to go vegan.

Garcia addressed his unconventional vegan build by joking "Yeah, I'm still fat. Thought I'd address the elephant in the room...I became vegan at the time when vegans are going through a whole cupcake renaissance. It's definitely kept my mind off cheese." He went on about having to check labels and the unfortunate name of rapeseed oil, but it was his joke about still being fat that really got me thinking.

It got me thinking that we now live in a time where it is not only easy to be a vegan, but it is not too hard to be a fat vegan. Vegan foods are becoming mainstream and with that comes an influx of unhealthy vegan foods. I don't like that there is a negative connotation to being fat, I don't think being fat means you're lazy, the only conclusion I draw from being someone being fat is that they consume more calories than they burn.

To be honest I would prefer the stereotypical vegan be a bit chubby opposed to the stick that most people associate with veganism. That being said, I believe with all other things being equal, the best vegan ambassador is a fit one.

When talking about the health benefits of a vegan lifestyle, it is becoming more important to emphasize that the dietary part should be whole foods based. Though with the increase of fat vegans, I have to believe that the taste of vegan food is becoming more appealing. So if you meet a fat vegan, definitely become friends with them, because they know where the best tasting vegan food is. Jorge has posted many tasty vegan delights on his blog.

If you're in the LA area you can see Jorge Garcia perform at the iO improv on Friday July 8th.
