Bob Barker and PETA urge vacationers to skip SeaWorld this summer

Former game show host and animal rights advocate Bob Barker is teaming up with PETA to urge vacationers to skip SeaWorld this summer. Barker recently filmed a public service announcement that PETA hopes to air on Orlando Florida TV stations.

In the spot, the former Price is Right hosts urges people to stay away from SeaWorld this summer and “Be a winner for animals.”

“Life in cramped tanks is no prize for orcas and dolphins, who want to be free with their families in the ocean.” Barker says in the ad “Many have died prematurely at SeaWorld after swimming in endless circles and performing dumb tricks day in and day out.”

A spokesman for PETA said they were trying to capitalize on the recent slump in the company’s business which may have been caused in part by the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010.

An investigation by OSHA found SeaWorld to be culpable for Brancheau’s death.

After Brancheau’s death, SeaWorld initially stopped trainers from getting in the water with the whales, but recently the company announced that new safety procedures had been installed and that trainers and whales would interact in the water again.

In a statement, a SeaWorld spokesman called PETA an "extremist organization" and said, "The public would be better served if Mr. Barker and PETA would focus their energy on animals truly in need."
