No Meat Zone Recipes: Vegan Cabbage Stir Fry (Varai)

Cabbage is cultivated extensively all over the world. Mostly its among the cheapest vegetables in the market. Cabbage is very high in vitamin A and contains vitamin C, carbohydrate and proteins. It helps to fight hemorrhage.

This simple stir fry dish along with rice and gravy is a complete meal. Cabbage stir fry was representing yellow dish in our colorful and yummy Sri Lankan lunch spread.


Cabbage Stir Fry (Varai)

Serves 2-3
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 onion diced
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 red chilis diced
  • 1 tsp of each mustard and cummin seeds
  • 1 tbsp yellow gram
  • 400g cabbaged thinly sliced
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • Salt

Heat oil in a non-stick pan, sauté onion, curry leaves and red chili for a minute. Add mustard, cumin seeds and yellow gram, stir for another 2 minutes. When they start to splutter add cabbage, salt and turmeric.

Stir cabbage for 5 minutes till it’s wilted and water is evaporated. Serve with rice.
