Former Cheers star and Oceana board member Ted Danson was quite pleased with the recent announcement that Belize has banned trawling.
"Kudos to Belize, and here's hoping that more countries follow its lead to reduce their destructive fishing footprint," said Danson.
Trawling involves pulling a fishing net behind one or two vessels.
The practice can be further sub-categorized into bottom and midwater trawling depending on the placement of the net.
In the case of the Belize ban, bottom trawling, which entails dragging the trawl or net across the bottom of the ocean, specifically has been targeted due its unintended (hopefully) damage to coral habitats.
According to the eco-friendly real estate group Sanctuary Belize, the ban on the destructive fishing method is “complete and permanent” and reveals the Caribbean nation’s commitment to “respecting and preserving” the environment.
The ban went into effect on Dec. 31, 2010.
