Daytime host Rachael Ray donates $775,000 to pets in need

Daytime TV's chirpy chef, Rachael Ray will donate 100% of the profits ($775,000 prior to Dec. 31) from her two pet food lines to animal shelters across America.

"If you want to look at the state of humans, you should look at the state of animals first," Ray said in an interview with People.com. "People are choosing whether or not they can feed an animal and their family. And every shelter coast-to-coast is stuffed."

Ray started giving to animal charities in 2008, and developed Nutrish Dog Food and Just 6 Dog Treats solely so she could give away her share of the proceeds. "It's a constant stream of income, and a source of relief for people that are exhausted, trying to care for their families and care for animals," she said.

Ray also suggests ways for everyone to help, however small the donation. "When you're out grocery shopping for your family, maybe you can put a can of cat or dog food in your cart and bring it to an animal shelter," She explained. Maybe you can take your kids by [a shelter] and have them donate something very basic. If you can give one or two dollars, or even ten dollars, to charity, it's a great step."
