Those of you that saw the 2009 film Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep, were probably just as disturbed as I was with the ubiquitous scenes of cooking whole chickens, killing lobsters, and heaps and heaps of butter. To say the least, this was not an enjoyable film experience for me.
Enter Annie and Dan Shannon. Both are longtime vegans (she is 35 and has been vegan for 22 of those years and he, 30, has been vegan for 15.) Inspired by Julia Powell's infamous attempt to cook all of Julia Child's recipes and also the film's unremorseful and carefree attitude toward the animals that are on their way to simply becoming a meal, this vegan power couple decided to recreate every recipe in the vintage and very meaty Betty Crocker Cookbook, but a vegan version instead! Yum!
Their main objective is to show the world that not only is it easy being vegan, but that any ol' recipe can be made vegan! How awesome are they?! But this no small feat. You have to remember Crocker's cookbook was originally published in 1950 and is loaded with hardy and lard filled meat and dairy creations like Cheeseburger Pie. The Shannons will attack every recipe in the 456 page book, tackling some of the toughest and most carnivorous recipes around including Bacon Cheeseburger Hash, Beef with Bordelaise Sauce, Buffalo Chicken Wings and Kung Pao Pork. Oh yeah, and you can't forget the decadent desserts like Devil's Food cupcakes, New York Cheesecake, and Pineapple Upside Cake!
