Great Gluten-Free Vegan Eats lives up to its name

Let’s get this out in the open: I eat gluten. I’m blessed to be able to tolerate it, and frankly, since my son started working in an organic vegan bakery, I frequently partake in glutenous delights. But several people near and dear to me are gluten-intolerant and I was interested to see if Great Gluten-Free Vegan Eats would help me find common ground - dishes both they and I could enjoy when we dine together.

Now I see the error of that thinking. Gluten-free vegan meals don’t have to be a compromise! These recipes are full-flavored, the textures are near identical, and for the most part they are no more complicated than glutenous recipes.

Author Allyson Kramer, the mind behind the celebrated gluten-free vegan blog Manifest Vegan, makes replacing the wheat in flour-based foods easy with recipe starters like “Bizquix” and “Easygoing Pie Crust.” The first chapter also has basic recipes for pasta, bread, almond milk, vegetable broth, cashew cream, white chocolate and more.

Many classic comfort foods are included, from biscuits and scones, to ravioli and stroganoff. But even for the more unfamiliar flavors, the fabulous photography and easy-to-follow recipes draw you in.

And the desserts! If you’ve ever been at a loss for a gluten-free dessert or stressed out over the number of ingredients, worry no more. These fabulous, simple desserts will be a hit with your family and friends. (My omnivorous kids went crazy for the peanut butter cookies, which take less than 15 minutes to prepare.)

As a soy-free vegan, I was also delighted to find that the vast majority of the recipes are not soy-dependent. Most feature fresh, whole foods - it’s the type of book you’ll turn to again and again when you see what’s in season at the farmer’s market.

In the end, there’s only one thing you need to know: Great Gluten-Free Vegan Eats lives up to the promise in the title - the eats are great.
