Vegans, vegetarians and grossed-out consumers rejoice: Starbucks' Strawberries & Crème Frappuccino is bug-free! The formula of the drink's strawberry sauce has been revised, removing the cochineal extract and replacing it with the natural tomato-based alternative, lycopene.
It is important to note that Starbucks' shops may still be using older stock that contains the cochineal extract. To be certain, ask your barista for a peek at the strawberry sauce packaging.

Ingredients: Reconstituted strawberry puree, white grape juice concentrate, natural flavour, lycopene colour
I sent an email out to Starbucks requesting clarification of source of the natural flavoring and received a speedy response verifying that the flavoring is, in fact, plant-based.
So, vegans and vegetarians, the Strawberries & Crème Frappuccino, when ordered with soy milk and without whipped cream, is once again on the "okay" list for items to enjoy at your favorite coffee shop.
