Contest and Review: Nuts for 100% natural laundry soapnuts

About the product: Soapnuts come from the fruit of the soapnut tree, most commonly found in India. Their shells contain saponin, a natural, chemical free, antimicrobial surfactant, great to use in place of regular laundry detergent. To use: fill the provided bag with a few soapnuts, and place it where you would normally put detergent, and start the cycle! Each soapnut can be used at least five times. Soapnuts are hypoallergenic, and do not cause skin irritations—perfect for people with sensitive skin, children, and pets! Soapnuts are also environmentally friendly, reusable, compostable, and work great in high efficiency washers.

What I washed: My very large pile of clothes on normal cycle. Included were workout outfits, work clothes, and a random face towel. There were no stains or huge spots that needed to be addressed. If you have stained clothes, I would still pre-treat with your favorite spot remover! Once my clothes were dry I proceeded to give them the smell test: my clothes smelled clean, almost as if I washed them on the banks of a pristine stream. No lingering chemical odor and NO headache inducing scent that results from using too much fabric softener. It was a very subtle, yet pleasant smell.

The outcome: I really enjoyed this innovative, yet simple laundry solution. I strive to pick the most natural way to clean, and soapnuts have stayed true to their claims, and will surely impress the ecologically conscious consumer. The ease of use is probably my favorite thing next to its eco-friendly, chemical free composition. Literally, all there is to do is place the bag where your detergent usually goes, and voila. It was so easy that I had trouble walking away from my washing machine, as if I forgot to do something.
