New green smoothie diet book provides solid weight-control advice

The New Green Smoothie Diet, by the aptly-named nutritionist and author Hilary Greenleaf, introduces newcomers to the world of green smoothies with common sense, practical advice. While the book does discuss the place that green smoothies hold in a balanced weight-loss plan, it is not a conventional diet book, with hard-and-fast rules about what to eat and when. Instead, it provides information on the health benefits of green smoothies and how they can assist with weight-loss, healthy detoxification, and fortifying the body against disease.

The basic principle espoused in The New Green Smoothie Diet is that, by adding homemade blended fruit and vegetable drinks to your diet (as opposed to juices that strip out the fiber, or prepared smoothies that may have added sugars, fats, or preservatives), you can easily consume the recommended daily amount of  fruits and vegetables in your diet. In doing so, you increase your fiber intake, which can provide a feeling of fullness, and eliminate empty calories. The book recommends incorporating smoothies into a well-balanced diet, rather than using them as regular meal replacement, and avoiding crash dieting. This safe, simple approach is sure to satisfy both your appetite and the concerns of your healthcare professional.

The book also discusses green smoothies as an alternative to dangerous low-nutrient detox cleanses, highlights the cancer-fighting properties of the fruits and vegetables in the smoothies, and advises on which nutrients are known to support the immune system.

The New Green Smoothie Diet contains numerous smoothie recipes to try, but also gives solid advice on how to create your own recipes, experimenting to find the flavors that are your favorites. All recipes given are vegan, but it should be noted that the book is not written primarily for a vegan audience, and meat is briefly mentioned in the discussion of diet.

For those who are already making their own green smoothies, the book may not provide much that's new beyond the specific recipes. But for those who are new to the idea, who are trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet (or their children's diet), or who are looking to control weight safely, The New Green Smoothie Diet is a good investment in health at $2.99 on Amazon.com.
