Bronx woman found guilty of animal cruelty after leaving dog to starve to death

A Bronx woman will be paying a $1,000 fine and spending up to one year in prison after being found guilty of (animal cruelty) abandoning her dog and leaving him to starve to death.

Thirty-year-old Cherika Alvarez left her one-year-old pit bull pup Alizé for dead after being evicted from her basement apartment back in November 2009.

Alvarez claims she arranged for her neighbor to pick up the pup, and that she left food and water for the young dog in the bathtub. However, the person never showed up, and Alvarez didn't bother to make sure Alize'was being cared for.

With nothing else to eat, the starving dog spent six miserable weeks eating razor blades, splintered plastic, wood chips, and garbage and ketchup packets, before he died.

When members of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) found the dog's body two months later, lying lifeless next to bloody stools and piles of garbage, the sight was not at all pretty.

The poor pooch had no body fat, and his remains actually had to be scraped off the floorboards.

Alvarez has displayed a great act of animal cruelty, whether she really did intend to get the dog care or not. The puppy was left alone to die, with nobody to care for or feed him.
