Texas calf factory farm owner receives sentencing for animal abuse

The owner of E6 Cattle Co, Kirt Espenson, was sentenced to one year probation and a $4,000 fine for cruelty to the animals on his farm.

Members of Mercy For Animals went undercover, capturing footage of the abuse and mistreatment of the helpless animals. This is what they found:
•Workers bludgeoning calves in their skulls with pickaxes and hammers
•Beaten calves, still alive and conscious, thrown onto piles to slowly suffer and die
•Workers kicking sick or injured calves in the head, and standing on their necks and ribs
•Calves confined to squalid hutches, thick with manure and urine buildup, and barely large
enough for the calves to turn around or fully extend their legs
•Gruesome injuries, including open sores, swollen joints and severed hooves
•Sick, injured and dying calves denied any medical care
In addition to Espenson, five of his employees are facing felony charges of animal cruelty, although all five have fled. The E6 company foreman was arrested on misdemeanor charges.

It's unfortunate that the five wanted employees will possibly escape any form of punishment and the foreman will get away with only a misdemeanor charge. As for the owner, Espenson, a year probation and a $4,000 fine seems to be a small price to pay for the crimes committed. Where is the justice for the animals?
Would a $4,000 fine per abused animal be a more adequate punishment?

There are countless instances of animal cruelty occurring on a daily basis that go unrecognized. Hopefully this case, along with others like it, will help to get the ball rolling on achieving a safer environment for farm animals.
