Nicole Richie shows maturity and compassion, takes in stray cats

She may have seemed like a typical spoiled celebrity during her reality TV days with then-best friend Paris Hilton, but Nicole Richie has grown up.  And it turns out, the mom of two also has a heart of gold-- at least when it comes to creatures of the feline persuasion.

Already the adoptive mother to an Abyssinian kitty named Gypsy, Richie couldn't help but extend some of her wealth to a sweet little stray who started hanging out around the LA home she shares with punk-rocker husband Joel Madden.

Tabitha Jones Madden, or Tabby for short, usually stays outdoors and is happy to accept Richie's kindness, but she hasn't lost her street cat attitude.

"She doesn't really let me touch her or him, so I don't know [if Tabby is male or female]," Richie said in an interview with PeoplePets.com.  "I call her a 'her' because she's beautiful."

Tabby definitely struck gold by skulking around the Richie/Madden household, and it seems pretty clear she was sure to share the news with her fellow 'alley cats.'

"I think cats have big mouths," Richie hypothesized.  "She spread the word and then came back with a black cat and an orange cat.  I was like, 'Oh, no, no, no -- this isn't happening!'. So then I stopped [feeding them all], and then she started coming back [alone]."
