PETA clarifies intent of letter sent to Nicole Richie

PETA is no stranger to tabloid sensationalism. Case in point, consider the recent event where it was reported that PETA sent a letter to Nicole Richie blasting her for having an elephant at her wedding. The elephant was arranged as a surprise by Nicole's father Lionel Richie.

Keep in mind Nicole has spoken out in the past on the way Ringling abuses baby elephants.

The letter was sent by PETA to to inform the reality star that the elephant likely came from Have Trunk Will Travel. PETA states this company takes young elephants from the wild and uses bullhooks and electric shocks to force them to perform.

The letter also asked Richie to make sure exotic animals would be kept off her guest list for future celebrations. The goal of the letter was to raise awareness and to give a voice to the captive wild animals.

A representative for Nicole has not responded to requests for comment.
