Animal Planet to air ‘Whale Wars’ special featuring Pete Bethune

During the season finale of Whale Wars, viewers are left with a final image of Captain Pete Bethune being taken into custody by Japanese officials for his role in the February 15 boarding of the Shōnan Maru 2 where he attempted to conduct a citizen’s arrest on the captain. Bethune was charged with trespassing, obstructing the passage of a vessel, carrying a knife, and damaging property. The skipper was eventually given a two-year suspended sentence and deported to New Zealand.

Animal Planet recently announced that it will air an exclusive one-hour special of Whale Wars that will pick up where the series left off as Bethune shares his experiences with the viewers—including how he was treated while detained and what was going through his mind during that time period.

"Whale Wars viewers really have connected with Pete's passion this season," says Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet. "His actions in this campaign put him at the center of some very dramatic action. We're fortunate that he's agreed to open up about his extraordinary experiences at sea and on land to save whales."

The special episode featuring Pete Bethune called Whale Wars: From Pirate to Prisoner will follow the season finale of Animal Planet's Blood Dolphins on Friday, September 17 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. air on Labor Day—September 6—at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
