Public invited to name Philadelphia Zoo’s newborn female giraffe

The Philadelphia Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a female giraffe calf born on July 17. The baby, daughter to 9-year-old Stella and 4-year-old Gus, is the first giraffe calf to be born at the zoo in 13 years.

The public is invited to help name the newborn at the Philadelphia Zoo’s website. Name choices include Abigail, Patricia, and Shari with the results being announced in September. Additionally, individuals can support the female calf through the zoo’s “adopt” program which helps to ensure that the zoo animals receive the best possible care.

Chartered in 1859, the Philadelphia Zoo is America’s first zoo and is currently home to more than 1,300 animals from all over the world—many of them rare or endangered.
