Discovery Channel installs 446 foot long shark on Silver Spring headquarters

Ichthyophiliacs rejoice - the Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week is upon us! To celebrate they have transformed their Silver Spring, MD headquarters into a giant great white.

The inflatable shark named “Chompie" is 446 feet long, utilizes 6.65 miles of fabric, 36.7 miles of thread, and 6,400 hours went into his creation. If he were a real shark, he’d weigh 84,000 pounds (and the cruise ship industry would be in trouble).

Shark Week is cable’s longest running event and its 23rd anniversary week begins Sunday, August 1st at 9 PM ET/PT with Ultimate Air Jaws. I’m guessing the program is about how sharks sometimes leap out of the water to attack their prey and not about Chompie’s high-rise antics.
