Shortly after 9 p.m. on July 21, the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve had quite a surprise when a mare donkey gave birth to a Zedonk—a donkey-zebra mix. The Zedonk foal has the face of her mom and the stripes (on her legs) of her zebra father. While it’s not unheard of for donkeys and zebras to mate, it is extremely rare which has caused much excitement at the preserve.
According to the preserve, "Mother and baby are doing well and are on exhibit in a spacious pasture."
Home to more than 100 animals of varying species—the majority being rescues from private owners or theme parks with poor living conditions—the 20 acre Chestatee Wildlife Preserve is located 45 minutes north of Atlanta on Old Dahlonega Highway in Dahlonega, Ga.
