Photos from Discovery Channel’s upcoming Shark Week

It’s that time of year again. Time for the ever popular annual event celebrating our favorite marine predators—the shark.

On August 1, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week kicks off with “Ultimate Air Jaws” a hi-tech answer to last year’s "Air Jaws"—the fifth most-watched Shark Week special of all time. Filmed in HD and super-slow motion, "Ultimate Air Jaws" captures the one-ton great white sharks as they breach the surface of the South African waters to attempt a sneak attack on seals.

Additionally during Shark Week, Discovery Channel will air informative specials showing viewers the power of a shark bite, why shark attacks happen, and how attacks can be avoided. As always the week will be filled with feats, facts, and science pertaining to the underwater predators.

The 23rd installment of Shark Week begins this Sunday, August 1 at 9 p.m. ET on the Discovery Channel.
