City of Las Vegas implements mandatory spay and neuter ordinance

If you live in Las Vegas, NV and you own a cat or dog four months or older you are now required to have your four legged companion spayed or neutered or face fines that begin at $225 for a first offense and can reach as high as $1000 for a third infraction.

Additionally the ordinance—which took effect on April 1—also mandates that cats and dogs be implanted with microchips that aid in recovery if pets become lost.

According to officials, the city of Las Vegas has seen a 10-percent increase in impounded dogs and a 5-percent increase in impounded cats over the past three years. City Council members are hopeful the move to require spaying and neutering will dramatically decrease those numbers.
