Prince Fielder, the burley Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman, hit 46 homers and drove in 141 RBI last season, stats that will surely rank him highly on most fantasy baseball aficionado’s draft list. But his decision to become vegetarian two years ago makes him a solid number one with non-meat eaters everywhere.
Fielder’s conversion to a plant based diet was inspired by the best-selling book Skinny Bitch, written by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin.
The 25-year-old Brewers’ slugger said the book opened his eyes to the “gross” side of eating meat prompting him to drop his carnivorous activity altogether.
There are some, though, who have a hard time believing that a man with Fielder’s physique—5’11” and 270 pounds—is a vegetarian. In a 2008 interview with MLB.com, he explained that people tend to “forget there’s so much other food out there. Beans, rice, tofu. You’ve got a lot of good food, baby!”
Forgoing meat eating has definitely not hurt his performance, since making the switch Fielder has hit 80 home runs and amassed 243 RBI over a two year span. He appeared in his second all-star game last season where he had one hit and drove home one run.
