People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) selected the top five animal friendly Super Bowl commercials, one of which doesn’t quite fit.

The top five included: “Whale of a Tale” by Bridgestone, “Timothy Richman” by Cars.com, “Finding Beaver” by Monster.com, “Squirrel” by Honda and finally “Underdog” by Doritos.

According to PETA’s blog post, “This year, the ads that were shown during the big game made history with their creative alternatives to live animals.” Interestingly the pooch in the “Underdog” Doritos ad seemed pretty authentic.

Obviously special effects were incorporated to make the dog appear to have the ability to remove a bark collar and reattach it to his human handler but he was definitely alive.

Additionally, although the ad was funny and very creative it still contained a mean spirited overtone; endured pain for any creature including humans should always be a factor for selection. Something that PETA should consider prior to picking next year’s winners.

NOTE: I personally have no issue with the Doritos commercial, in fact we featured the ad on TDIV a couple of days ago.
