Katie Couric recently sat down with Ellen DeGeneres to discuss the comedienne’s advice to young women and men, her relationship with Portia de Rossi, and her new adventure as an American Idol judge. DeGeneres was also able to touch on other topics that are close to her heart.

When discussing the vitriol in society, DeGeneres explained that she tries to shift people’s views by just being who she is, not by hating. She added, “There is a lot of carelessness and disrespect to the planet not just to one another. I think we have to start with loving every living thing, loving trees and loving animals and loving our ocean. That’s one place to start before we even can be kind to one another.”

Couric asked DeGeneres why she decided to become a vegan. The talk show host responded, “I forced myself to watch a documentary called Earthlings. It’s inside footage of factory farms and dairy farms. You just see that and you go, ‘I can’t participate in that.’ I can’t be a part of something that is suffering.

“I do it because I love animals and I saw the reality and I just couldn’t ignore it anymore.

“I really truly believe that we take in energy and our thoughts are important and all that stuff. I believe in that kind of positive thinking. I can’t imagine that if you are putting something in your body that is filled with fear or anxiety or pain that that isn’t somehow going to be inside of you.”

The 30 minute interview allows us to see our favorite funny lady discussing issues that are extremely important to her. Her views on tolerance, society, animals, and our planet are inspiring and definitely worth a listen.

Portions of the interview can be found in the March issue of Glamour magazine.
