The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is launching a new line of cruelty-free, all-natural, certified-organic dog food. The brand, called Humane Choice, will be sold at PETCO, Whole Foods, and many independently owned pet supply stores.
Humane Choice offers pet owners a wholesome and nutritious food to feed their beloved pooches. The food contains no animal-based products and does not support the factory farming industry.
"Americans are concerned about the food we eat, and it just makes sense that we'd be concerned about the food we provide to our pets," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the HSUS. "Humane Choice is a nutritious, environmentally friendly and ethically responsible food for our best friends. Every bag of Humane Choice helps us celebrate the pets we love, and provides us with additional resources to help animals through our programs."
The product is currently available online and at select PETCO and Whole Foods locations in New Jersey and New York. Additional locations will begin selling Humane Choice in the spring.
HSUS will receive 6% of the wholesale price and will use the money to fund various programs such as spay and neuter, undercover investigations, rescue efforts, and veterinary care.

We buy a vegetarian dog food for our dogs from PetsMart. It's called Nature's Recipe. They love it. I wish there was a more cruel free option for cats though that was affordable. I used to make their food but now I just buy it. If you hear about anything, let me know.
If it is wrong to feed animal based food to cattle, how can it be right to feed vegitarian food to a carnivor?
Here "We" go again, screwing around with what animals are supposed to eat! Dogs & cats eat meat & bones; cattle and chickens don't... this cannot possibly be good for dogs! It has all the things they are prone to be allergic to... like soy!
Humane Choice has been formulated to meet the nutritional needs of adult dogs established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. I work at the HSUS and am a dog owner myself. Our organization has always celebrated the human-animal bond and has an obvious interest in promoting food that benefits canine health. It's every owner's decision as to what pet food works best for his/her dog, and this is simply another option. More information about Humane Choice can be found at http://www.thehumanechoice.com/faq1.htm.
Just because its been approved by an FDA, doesent make it acceptable because they only set minimal standards required for survival, theres a huge difference between SURVIVING and THRIVING. This "food" is an equivalent of your dog eating cardboard with synthetic vitamins/minerals sprinkled on top.
Of you have a piece of celery in one hand and a steak in the other, which one will the dog go for??
I just read through the faqs, and found the following quote:"However it does contain three essential micronutrients (Vitamins A, B12 and D3) that may come from animal based sources." As far as I'm concerned, this negates the ENTIRE premise of cruelty free. I am disappointed. Why should I go through all the trouble of finding a cruelty free dog food if even the Humane Society is going to lie to me about the contents? Sneaky manipulations of this kind are no better than those by Monsanto and conventional meat producers. Cruelty to ONE animal is just as bad as cruelty to many. This is why so many people don't bother with the hassle of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. Unless you are willing to dig long and deep, you never get a straight answer, and you never find. When will the consumer stop being lied to? This product is NOT 100% cruelty free!
