The United States dropped from 39th to 61st in the latest Environmental Performance Index released by a team of experts from Yale and Columbia Universities.

The index ranks 163 countries using 25 indicators combined into ten categories such as environmental health, air quality, water resource management and climate change.

The disappointing ranking places the U.S. far behind other industrialized nations.

The United Kingdom (14th), Germany (17th) and over 20 members of the EU outpaced the United States.

Iceland finished 1st and was acknowledged for leading the world in addressing pollution control, natural resource management and controlling green house gases.
