Betty White accepts lifetime SAG Award presented by Sandra Bullock

During Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Betty White accepted a lifetime achievement award for a career that has spanned over 60 years.

The award was presented by Sandra Bullock, White’s co-star in The Proposal, who joked that White was annoying because she makes everyone feel like a slacker. White teased back, “Isn’t it heartening to see how far a girl as plain as she is can go?” The digs were, of course, all in fun.

White, a lover of animals since she was a young girl, has worked with the Morris Animal Foundation and L.A. Zoo since the ‘70s. She recently told TVGuide.com, "I'm the luckiest person in the world. My life is divided in absolute half: half animals, half show business. They're the two things I love the most and I have to stay in show business to pay for my animal work!"

The actress distances herself from the moniker ‘animal rights activist’ as she prefers to stay away from the political and demonstrative side of animal welfare. Instead dedicates herself to furthering the health of animals, which allows her to stay positive with her work.

Betty White doesn't distance herself from animal rights as a "moniker" - she is not an animal rights person. She fought hard to keep Billy the elephant in the LA Zoo where he is miserable and alone and has endorsed many other examples of animal exploitation. Her view is that it's ok to exploit an animal as long as your are relatively kind to it, which makes her very much not an animal rights person - activist or not.

Congratulations to Betty White on her long career, and I have to agree with Reuben too. She wants animals too look happy enough that people don't think about whether their needs are actually being met. Betty, health of animals means much more than removing overt cruelty.
