Charitable organizations worldwide are accepting donations to aid in the Haiti relief effort. It is recommended that donors find a trustworthy charity when donating. People should not give money directly to the Haitian government. Additionally, unknown charities that use telephone and email solicitations as a method of contact should be avoided.
Below is a list of credible charities that are helping the survivors in Haiti. Check back for updates.
The American Red Cross is sending aid and has released $10 million to Haiti relief. The organization is also helping the injured who may need blood. According to a statement by the Red Cross, "Priority needs in Haiti are food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. Thousands of local Red Cross volunteers are aiding their fellow Haitians. American Red Cross Disaster management specialists are scheduled to arrive today from the United States, Peru and Mexico to join local Red Cross staff already on the ground in the disaster zone. As soon as airports begin accepting relief shipments, tarps, hygiene items and cooking sets for approximately 5,000 families will come from the Red Cross warehouse in Panama."

UNICEF is absorbing all associated administrative costs so that 100% of every dollar you give to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF will support UNICEF's relief efforts for children in Haiti. "Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them before, during and after any emergency situation," said Caryl Stern, President and CEO, U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "More funds are urgently needed to provide safe water, temporary shelter systems, hygiene kits, essential medicines, water purification tablets, portable toilets and family kits containing blankets and soap."

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières has already treated more than 1,000 people on the ground in Haiti following Tuesday's earthquake. An inflatable hospital is on its way. "Basic provisions were always problematic for people in Port-au-Prince but the position is far worse now," said Vincent Hoedt, one of MSF's emergency coordinators. "And obviously there's a concern for people who are already weakened by injuries. There are also shortages of things like gasoline, which affects the working of all kinds of vital equipment."

CARE has deployed supplies and additional emergency team members to Haiti. Sophie Perez, CARE's country director in Haiti, was in the CARE office in Port-au-Prince when the earthquake hit. ''Children were still in school when the earthquake hit, so there are many children trapped. It's horrifying,'' Perez said. ''The slums on the hills have also completely collapsed. We've heard of landslides, with entire communities being wiped out.''
