Last night Gordon Ramsay taught viewers how to prepare a three course meal on “Gordon Ramsay: Cookalong Live.” The Michelin-starred chef, known for his dislike of plant-based diets, used the segment with ex-vegan and "How I Met Your Mother" star Alyson Hannigan to jab at vegetarians and vegans. After Hannigan explained that she craved meat when becoming pregnant, Ramsay responded, “I am amazed that you actually managed to get sorta pregnant with the energy eating seeds and nuts and fruit.” He also implied that Hannigan may be tempted to eat the seasoned chopping board.
Hannigan, who appeared to have no problem with Ramsay’s digs toward the lifestyle she once practiced, revealed that she now considers herself to be a cute-atarian. “I don’t eat cute things. I won’t eat like bunnies or ducks.” Hannigan’s comments suggested that the “ugly meat” steak she had sizzling in the pan did not come from a “cute” animal.
Ramsay is no stranger to feuds with vegetarians. In 2005, on an episode of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares on BBC, Ramsay offered a slice of vegetarian pizza to a customer. After the pizza was eaten, Ramsay revealed that parma ham was underneath the cheese and tomatoes. The incident infuriated vegetarians around the globe.
Gordon Ramsay is no doubt a great chef but being an expert in the culinary arts, Ramsay should not only be able to prepare vegetarian food but also respect the vegetarian lifestyle choice. With the amount of meat-less options available, it is amazing that someone of his expertise cannot see beyond using meat as a main-course crutch.
